It Might Be Time For Rationing System

March 16, 2020

Editor, The News-Gazette:

I’ve been in the stores and noticed how, due to the coronavirus scare, they have run out of many cleaning supplies and food items. Luckily, I’ve been able to have plenty of what I need, but I work for a home care company for seniors, and I have clients who no longer drive, who have health problems including bowel issues, and who depend on me to take them to the stores to buy things. And, I know they can’t eat empty shelves, nor wipe on their fingers.

This has gotten me to thinking: I heard on the radio that Walmart and other stores have started limited their opening hours to give staff time to restock. President Trump has asked people not to hoard supplies. Why not institute a ration-coupon or an even-odd day buying system? It might be draconian, but it might eliminate, or at least, alleviate hoarding. Maybe it will help keep the black-marketeers at bay, and guarantee that Americans have enough food and supplies.
