Horticulture Show Returns To Rockbridge Regional Fair

The Rockbridge Regional Fair Horticulture Show will once again be sponsored and managed by the Rockbridge Area Master Gardener’s Association, according to Faith Vosburgh and Penny Wilson, co-chairs of the event.

Cash prizes for the top three entries in each of the three divisions will be awarded.

The full schedule of classes for what plants may be entered can be found in the fair book, available at the Rockbridge County Extension Office, 150 S. Main St., Lexington, and at various locations throughout Rockbridge County.

Just about any annual, perennial or bulb in bloom may be entered, in addition to house plants, herbs, shrub branches, tree branches or vines. According to Vosburgh, “The classes are really wide open and open to ages 9 through

90. We hope anyone that grows anything will bring something to exhibit. It is a great opportunity to show off what is growing in your garden.”

Entries for the horticulture show will be accepted on Wednesday, Sept. 4, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the mezzanine level of the Anderson Coliseum at the Virginia Horse Center.

A full staff of Master Gardeners will be on hand to help exhibitors identify and display exhibits if necessary and will help exhibitors in completing entry forms, identifying plants, and helping them display their entries properly and to their best advantage.

According to Wilson, on Tuesday evening before entry, exhibitors should cut specimens they want to enter and put them in cold water overnight in a darkened room. “This allows the plants to recover from the stress of being cut and to take up enough water in the stem to stay fresh for the duration of the show,” she said.

On Wednesday morning, the exhibits should be placed in plain (no lettering) clear glass bottles filled with water and brought to the Virginia Horse Center for entry. Plastic bottles or containers are not permitted.
