Hoops Honors Handed Out

Seven Parry McCluer High School basketball players, five boys and two girls, received postseason honors last week.

For the PM boys, junior guard Will Dunlap was named Pioneer District player of the year and was selected to the all-district first team and the All-Region 1C first team. Sophomore forward Spencer Hamilton was named to the all-district first team and the all-region second team. Junior guard Talen Roberts was selected to the all-district second team. Receiving all-district honorable mention honors were freshman forward John Snider and junior guard Ethan Moore.

The PM boys’ head coach, Mike Cartolaro, was named coach of the year for both the Pioneer District and Region 1C. Cartolaro, in his fourth year of coaching the Blues, led them to a 20-7 record, the district regularseason title, and their first Region 1C championship since 1995. The Blues made their first state tournament appearance in seven years, ending the season with a 49-46 loss to Grundy in the Class 1 state quarterfinals.

For the PM girls, sophomore forward Katie Claytor was named to the all-region first team, and freshman guard Anna Claytor was selected to the all-region second team. The older Claytor sister missed the postseason due to an ankle injury. The Blues had a record of 10-13 this year, winning the third-place game in the district tournament before ending their season with a Region 1C quarterfinal loss at Galax.

All-state teams will be announced at a later date.
