High-Speed Chase Ends In Rockbridge

David A. Chidester, 34, of Afton, was arrested June 16 following a high-speed chase that ended with a wreck in Rockbridge County.

Waynesboro Police notified the Rockbridge County Sheriff’s Office last Tuesday afternoon that a pursuit that began in Waynesboro was expected to continue beyond Augusta County on Interstate 81 into Rockbridge. The pursuit involved a possible stolen vehicle and wanted subject, Chidester, who fled from police.

Virginia State Police reportedly became involved in the pursuit in Augusta County. Rockbridge Chief Deputy Tony McFaddin told The News-Gazette Rockbridge deputies became involved and set up to be prepared to intercept the driver.

Chidester reportedly got off at exit 195 at Timber Ridge and headed south toward Lexington on U.S. 11. Authorities set up spike strips, or “stingers,” near the traffic light near the entrance to Lowe’s to deflate the suspect’s tires.

After a successful deployment of spike strips, Chidester drove on toward the Interstate 64 interchange. McFaddin described Chidester as having tried to turn onto the I-64 west on-ramp, but could not do it because of his deflated tires. He crashed through the guardrail and drove over the steep embankment beneath it.

Officers ran down the embankment and apprehended Chidester on the scene. He was charged by Virginia State Police with two counts of reckless driving while endangering police and driving on a revoked license. RCSO also executed arrest warrants on Chidester for felony unauthorized use of a vehicle for Albemarle Police.

Area resident John Loomis was driving in the left hand lane when the police pursuit passed by him on U.S. 11.

“I’ve never seen anything quite like it in Rockbridge County,” Loomis told The News-Gazette, describing about 15 police vehicles chasing after the fleeing vehicle. “It was quite dramatic.”

Chidester was taken to Carillion Stonewall Jackson Hospital for treatment of injuries from the vehicle accident. He was released and remains in custody at the Rockbridge Regional Jail.
