Hassler Sentenced To A Year In Jail Case

Oct. 29, 2 p.m. - Former Rockbridge Regional Jail head nurse Gary Hassler was sentenced in federal court in Lynchburg today to one year and a day for falsifying a jail report.

He had been found guilty of the charge by a federal jury in July. He had been charged with two counts of falsifying a document with the intent to obstruct an FBI investigation, but the jury had found him not guilty on the other charge.

He had been tried for having conspired with former Rockbridge Regional Jail superintendent John Higgins to violate the civil rights of inmates by failing to protect them from abuse and not providing medical treatment.

Higgins, who is facing 21 indictments, is set to go to trial in December.
