Despite the gray skies, cold rain and winds brought on by the remnants of Hurricane Beta, the George C. Marshall Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America successfully hosted its annual Veteran Support Golf Tournament at the Lexington Golf & Country Club on Friday afternoon.

The tournament was played using a captain’s choice format, also known as the scramble format, with the best ball chosen after each shot. First, second and third-place cash prizes were awarded to both male and female flights. Prizes were also awarded for men’s and women’s closest to the pin and longest drive. Two women’s and seven men’s teams, with a total of thirty-four golfers, competed in the tournament.

The team of Jane Mortenson, Sue Boller, Laura Lanier and Sofia Vargas placed first for the women’s flight with a net score of 57 on the 18-hole, par-71 course. The winning men’s flight team consisted of Mike Evans, Andy Johnson, Thom Gill and Trey Tilson with a net score of 55. Rich Bigelow won the honors for men’s closest to the pin, and Sofia Vargas was the winner of women’s closest to the pin. For the title of longest drive, Laura Lanier was the women’s winner, and Ricky Frazier won for the men.

All proceeds from the tournament will be used to support special service projects and to provide assistance and scholarships for veterans and their families.
