Galford Scores 24 To Lead RC Girls Over Knights In Opener

Tuesday, Dec. 3 – The Rockbridge County High School girls basketball team opened the season with a 66-35 win over James River on Tuesday night in Lexington.

RC raced to 20-5 lead after the first quarter before the Knights (1-1) cut it to 33-20 at halftime, but the Wildcats started the third quarter on an 8-0 run to pull away.

Emily Galford got on a roll in the second half and led the Wildcats with 24 points, sinking three 3-pointers and going 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Galford, who scored 15 points in the second half, dished out three assists and made three steals.

The Wildcats had three other players who scored in double figures. Graceon Armstrong scored 15 points and led RC with 16 rebounds, five steals and two blocks while adding three assists before fouling out late in the fourth quarter. Phynely Stores chipped in 11 points and five rebounds, and Emily Mahood scored 10 points and grabbed 11 boards and two steals in her first varsity game.

Zoe Camden contributed six points for the Wildcats, making two 3-pointers, and added three assists. Aiyana Cooper had a strong effort off the bench in her first varsity game, grabbing five rebounds and a steal.

Madison Brogan was JR’s only double-digit scoring, with 13 points, while Kaliyah Davis chipped in seven points and Lakota Lucado added five.

RC controlled the boards, pulling down 43 rebounds, while the Knights pulled down 24. The Wildcats overcame 22 fouls, while JR committed 19 fouls.

The Wildcats will return to action at home on Wednesday with another nondistrict game when they play host to Riverheads, starting with junior varsity action at 5:30 p.m.
