Freedom Food Festival Will Return Next Year

May 5, 2020

Editor, The News-Gazette:

The first Freedom Food Festival brought generous sponsors, restaurants and caterers, non-profits, great music, and a lot of happy, hot, thirsty folks to downtown Lexington last year. And thanks to strong community support, we were making plans for a bigger, better party.

However, we’ve decided to redirect our focus on 2021.

Many thanks to our sponsors to date including Bank of the James, Cattleman’s Market, CHEFS Catering, CornerStone Bank, Devils Backbone Brewing, Hess & Co Jewelers, Huffman Insurance Agencies Inc. IHOP at Lee-Hi, and Perkins & Orrison Inc.

Our local commercial kitchens and caterers were ready to mobilize and offer technical assistance and they include Bistro On Main, CHEFS Catering, full circle catering, the Southern Inn, Sweet Treats, and dear Laurie Macrae.

Two great bands and improved staging were planned to complete the party with many thanks to Spencer McElroy and Lime Kiln Theater. We are counting on a do-over next year!

I ask your readers to please continue their generosity to the nonprofits who would have benefited from the event. Please continue to support Boxerwood Education Association, Rockbridge Area Hospice, Friends of Natural Bridge State Park, Friends of Rockbridge Swimming Inc. and Hull’s Angels Inc.

We wonder if the Lexington Police Foundation would have walked away with the coveted Freedom Food Festival Spatula trophy for best overall meal, or would it have gone to Project Horizon, RATS, RCHS girls soccer team, Rockbridge FOLK, or Yellow Brick Road Early Leaning Center?

I don’t think anyone is more disappointed than our planning team. We are so grateful for the support from the city of Lexington including Council members, Jeff Martone Ty Dickerson, Trent Roberts, and Mark Riley and his fine folks.

We are confident that we’ll have even more to celebrate next July and can’t wait to meet you on Main Street!
