Former Bureaucrat Bemoans State Of The Union

Dec. 11, 2021

Editor, The News-Gazette:

In his epic poem “The Waste Land,” T.S. Eliot describes April as “the cruelest month.” Were he alive today and had he witnessed last week’s events in the nation’s Capitol, he might have changed the month to read January.

Before moving to Rockbridge County, I spent 25 years living and working in Washington, D.C. Half of that time was with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce focusing on legislative work, regularly meeting with Members of Congress and staff on both sides of the aisle, Republican and Democratic.

Unlike today, things worked reasonably well back then. Perhaps they will work well once again with a new administration, but the fact that so many members of Congress, including our own House representative, voted against certification of the election just hours after a mob breached and vandalized the Capitol makes me wonder.
