Former Area Resident Killed In N.C. Shooting

A Lexington native died last week after a shooting in Fayetteville, N.C.

Omar White, 26, was shot multiple times in a parking lot near a vehicle along the 4800 block of Alamance Road in Fayetteville around 11:46 a.m. on Feb. 9, according to Fayetteville Police Department.

White was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center where he later died from his injuries. The incident remains under investigation.

White was a 2014 graduate of Rockbridge County High School, where he was a standout athlete in football and basketball.

“We could tell right away [White] was special,” said Darrell Plogger, who coached him in Rockbridge Area Recreation Organization sports. Plogger, who also went on to coach White on the Rockbridge County High School basketball team, was first introduced to White through RARO football as a young teen. Plogger said in his several years coaching through the program, RARO had never seen anything like White’s athletic ability.

“He looked like he was jogging out there,” Plogger said of White’s natural athleticism.

Before his death, White had opened a retail store in Richmond.

“He worked for everything he had,” Plogger said. “He was always positive about everything.”

A memorial service for White will be held Feb. 20 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Lexington. Due to COVID restrictions, attendance will be limited. The service will also be shown on the church’s Facebook page.
