Five Compete In NC PM’s May Leads Local Harriers

Five local high school runners competed in the Foot Locker South Regional cross country meet to conclude the season on Saturday at McAlpine Park in Charlotte, N.C.

Parry McCluer sophomore Kensey May, who won the girls’ race at the Class 1 state meet two weeks earlier, led the way. In the girls’ championship race, May placed 37th of 195 harriers, completing the 5-kilometer course in 18:17. Finishing in her second-fastest 5K time, May crossed the line just nine seconds shy of her personal record.

The top 10 individuals in the championship races advanced to the Foot Locker National Meet on Dec. 14 in San Diego, California.

May said that, even though she didn’t run a personal record, “I was still pleased. It was just a good opportunity to have competition and meet people from all over.”

“It was important for Kensey to go,” PM head coach Chris Poluikis said, adding that the race would help prepare her for next year, when she will be transferring to a high school in Missoula, Montana, where her father, Clint, is the head coach cross country at the University of Montana. Poluikis said Kensey can aim to qualify for the national meet when she is in the West.

Running in the girls’ sophomore race was May’s PM teammate Koya Chandler, who placed 127th of 153 runners in 24:42.

In the boys’ junior race, Koya’s brother, Kedryn, an all-state runner for the PM boys’ state championship team last month, finished 241st of 403 runners in 17:16. Kedryn’s time was about 18 seconds shy of his personal record.

For Rockbridge County, Karalyn Timmes placed 51st of 116 harriers in the girls’ senior race, finishing in 21:10. Karalyn’s younger sister, Megan, finished 50th of 140 runners in 21:14 in the girls’ freshman race. The Timmes sisters were all-district runners for the RC girls this fall, helping the Wildcats place second at the Valley District Meet in late October.
