ELLEN DIXON

ELLEN DIXON

Our dear Mama and Grandhoney, Ellen Odessa Wilson Dixon, went to be with her Lord Jesus on Sunday, Oct. 16, 2022, at the age of 95.

She was born on Oct. 31, 1926. We are thankful that she was able to be in her home surrounded by her family.

Our mother was predeceased by the love of her life, Robert Edgar Dixon. They were married on Nov. 20, 1947. Also predeceasing her were her parents Ola Vinton and Margaret Hart Wilson, her sister and brother-inlaw Frances and Elden Bradley, her double aunt Buelah Wilson Hart, her mother and father-inlaw Frank and Agnes Dixon, brothers-in-law Frank Dixon and Bruce Dixon as well as six nephews.

Upon marrying our Daddy, Mama became a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church where she was a faithful servant. She later came full circle returning to New Monmouth Presbyterian Church where she grew up and was married.

Mama graduated from Lexington High School. She worked for the Western Union during WWII and was part of the “Secret Civil Defense Ladies,” a group of local women that were hired by the Department of Defense to work at Washington and Lee during the 1950s. She went on to have a very successful career with what is now Wells Fargo Bank, retiring after 30 years as assistant vice president and manager of the Nelson Street Branch.

Upon retirement, our mother spent many enjoyable hours creating her beautiful flower gardens which she shared with many. She became a member of the Glasgow Garden Club, winning many ribbons, and loved helping with their Christmas wreath sales.

Mama was active in the Rockbridge Area Weekday Religious Education and held the position as treasurer for many years. She became a member of the Kerrs Creek Ruritan Club at age 90.

Our mother maintained her wit and sense of humor with family and caregivers until the very end.

She is survived by her daughters Sandra Dixon Boone (Bradley), and Carol Ann Dixon Simmons; her grandchildren, April Boone, Jon Boone, Julie Simmons Gatesman (Shawn), and Jason Simmons (Elizabeth); her great-grandchildren, Lily, Eli, and Bodie Gatesman; and a special friend, Ivan Branch.

We are so very grateful for our mother’s caregivers as well as Rockbridge Area Hospice.

Memorial donations may be made at Rockbridgeareahospice. org or sent to Rockbridge Area Hospice, 315 Myers St., Lexington, VA24450.

Mama, we will always carry your memory in our hearts.
