DONALD BROWN

Donald Hankins Brown, 86, widower of Mary Rose (Walker) Brown, formerly of Cardinal Street, Staunton, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2023, at The Regency at Augusta in Fishersville.

Donald Hankins Brown, 86, widower of Mary Rose (Walker) Brown, formerly of Cardinal Street, Staunton, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2023, at The Regency at Augusta in Fishersville.

Mr. Brown was born in Augusta County on July 7, 1936, a son of the late William Walter Brown and Ruby Jeanette (Glover) Brown.

Donald was a veteran of the United States Army. He retired from the Department of Transportation in 1999, after 45 years as an assistant district right of way manager. Mr. Brown was an active member of Bethany Presbyterian Church where he served as treasurer and sang in the church choir. He enjoyed antiques, the outdoors, and playing cards.

In addition to his parents and wife of 59 years, Mr. Brown was preceded in death by a sister, Mary (Brown) Washburn, and a brother, Walter Thomas Brown.

Surviving is a son, Donald “Keith” Brown and his wife, Christina (Zechman) Brown, of Alexandria; a daughter, Amy (Brown) Thornton and her husband, John Timothy “J.T.” Jr. of Weyers Cave; a brother, Henry Thomas “H.T.” Martin of Craigsville; a brother-in-law, Robert Edgar “Ed” Walker Jr. of Goshen; a granddaughter, Chloe Dianne Thornton; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life was conducted Monday, Jan. 16, in the Coffman Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor John K. Craft.

Burial followed in Oaklawn Memory Gardens.

Active pallbearers were Keith Brown, J.T. Thornton, Roland Brown, Michael Sellers, Cameron Sellers, Stephen Martin and Bob Ryder.

Honorary pallbearers were Luther Wendell Maddox, Randy Swisher and Bob Bright.

It is suggested, that those desiring make memorial contributions to Bethany Presbyterian Church, 2501 Fifth Street, Staunton, VA 24401.

The family would like to express a sincere “Thank you” to Intrepid Hospice staff members Jim Bay and Ashley Phillips, the staff at Regency at Augusta, and Mr. James Young.

Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive in Staunton, is in charge of his arrangements.
