Do Not Take Freedoms For Granted

April 2, 2021

Editor, The News-Gazette:

Recently I reread “The Diary of Hannah Senesh”, which I highly recommend.

While Hannah, at the young age of 23 in November of 1944, was being captured, brutally tortured and eventually executed for trying to warn the Hungarian people of the approaching Nazis, I was being blessed to be born in America … thank you God.

This is Hannah’s last poem:

“Blessed is the match consumed in kindling flame.

“Blessed is the flame that burns in the secret fastness of the heart.

“Blessed is the heart with strength to stop its beating for honor’s sake.

“Blessed is the match consumed in kindling flame.”

So easy for our eyes and minds to gloss over these words: “captured, brutally tortured, executed.” I would ask us all to pause and truly imagine Hannah’s nightmare. And then, think back to what we were able to do at 23 because we were born in the USA.

Do not take our freedoms for granted.

We are in serious debt to those who have defended and protected our constitution … Big league debt!

“Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country!”

Pray, think, act. Improvise, adapt, overcome. Be involved! God bless you and God bless our America!
