Do The Math: Wear A Mask

Aug. 10, 2020

Editor, The News-Gazette:

I know that wearing a mask can be a real pain. And I know that when I run into people in stores who are not wearing masks, they have a variety of reasons for not doing so. One of the reasons I’ve heard more than once is, “You have a mask on. That’s your protection. And I don’t have one on because it’s my right not to wear one.”

This is where I ask nonmask wearers to do the math. I agree a mask protects me in each human interaction. But I also know that if you had a mask on when we walked by each other, I’d have double the protection. Your mask would give me two chances to avoid getting sick instead of just one.

It shouldn’t be political.
