Community Resource List Now Available

Residents of the greater Lexington-Rockbridge area have a new way to locate information on the area’s health, welfare and social service assistance providers.

Thanks to a collaboration between members of three community organizations, the new Community Resource List provides a searchable listing of services, names, location, and contact information for 230 area resources, ranging from Alcoholics Anonymous to YMCA. In addition, the list breaks down the services into several categories, including education and career, health services, legal services, food, and housing.

The list, available online as a spreadsheet, and in paper form as a booklet, was the product of a brainstorming session at a meeting of 50 Ways’ LGBTQ/ Women’s Rights issues group. According to the issue group coordinator, Ellen Mayock, members began to discuss the most pressing community needs. “Fio Lewis of Project Horizon, and Christian Worth, a former family law attorney, started describing how hard it is for people in our area to even know what kind of assistance is available to them,” Mayock said. “We realized that there is not one place that collects and distributes that information.”

So began a six-month project, coordinated by Mayock and managed by Bethany Reitsma, a work-study student in the ESOL program at Washington and Lee, which had recently begun a similar project. After collecting and verifying information from a variety of sources, Reitsma compiled the list into both an Excel spreadsheet and a Word document, making it useful for any community agency that wishes to put it on their website or print it for distribution.

“Lexington and Rockbridge are incredibly caring communities, as the sheer number of resources available shows,” Mayock said. “But people need to know about those resources before they can use them. We are hoping this list will help.”
