Colonial Story Up Next For Book Club

Rockbridge Regional Library’s Books and Brews Book Club will discuss Amy Belding Brown’s historical novel, “Flight of the Sparrow: A Novel of Early America,” online on Tuesday, Aug. 11, at 3:30 p.m.

The story portrays Mary Rowlandson, the wife of a Puritan minister in 1676 Colonial America, who was captured by Native Americans during King Phillips War. Brown lays out for the reader gritty settings and an array of fleshed out characters with realistic, complicated circumstances and emotions. Mary’s awareness and experiences amidst social mores and beliefs of the time enrich the plot. It’s a vivid portrayal of early American realities, a thrilling adventure story, and a commentary on human emotions and power structures that are still relevant today.

The Lexington branch of Rockbridge Regional Library System is open Monday through Thursday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday 1 to 5 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
