Clinton Lee Anderson passed away Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2022.
He was the son of Nelson Stokes Anderson and Florence Jane Saville Anderson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen Mary Scherff Anderson.
His sons and their families survive him: Michael Nelson Anderson (Pamela), John Stuart Anderson (Tamara) and Rafael Mariano Suarez (Alexandra) and grandchildren Thaddeus Drew Anderson, Collin Drake Montgomery, Nicholas Andrew Suarez-Salinas, Jack Thomas Anderson and Kaycee Kathleen Anderson.
Anderson retired from the United States Army as a lieutenant colonel (Dec. 31, 1982). He had served in combat in Vietnam as a field artillery officer. At Headquarters Department of the Army, he served as an education officer in the management and operations of the Army's continuing education programs. During his military service he was awarded the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster.
Anderson is a graduate of Effinger High School (1957) and received a bachelor's degree from Washington and Lee University cum laude with honors (1961). He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Social Fraternity and served as chapter president. He earned master's degrees from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and Stanford University, and a Doctorate in Adult and Higher Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. As a trained historian, he served on the Stanford University faculty as "Lecturer of Military History."
Anderson produced numerous professional articles and several books including “Adult Higher Education and the Military: Blending Traditional and Nontraditional Education” (1990); “Service Members Opportunity Colleges: 1972-1997” (1997); and “Remembering those who made a difference in the United States Military Voluntary Education” (2006).
Since November 1985, Anderson worked for the American Association of State Colleges and University on military-related programs. He was inducted into the International Adult and Continuing Education Hall of Fame (2000) and served on the Hall's Board of Directors as its chair.
He was a lifelong member of Oxford Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon, elder and trustee. He was a member of the Effinger Ruritan Club where he served twice as club president. He also served as Zone 4 governor and Natural Bridge Ruritan District governor. He was the first president of the Virginia Association of Ruritans. He was designated a "Tom Downing Fellow."
He loved local history and edited books regarding Palmer and Effinger Schools. He was a Master Mason.
He served on the Rockbridge County School Board from 1988 to1992 and on the Joint Committee for the Control of Lexington High School, where he served as vice chair and then chair (1990-1991). He served on the Board of Trustees, Davis and Elkins College.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, at Palmer Community Center. The family will gather with friends following the service. Burial will be private at Oxford Presbyterian Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, his family suggests a contribution either to the Oxford Presbyterian Church, 143 Oxford Lane, Lexington VA 24450; or to the International Adult and Continuing Education Hall of Fame, University of Oklahoma Outreach, 1700 Asp Ave., Norman, Ok, 73072-6400.
