Cemetery’s Condition Concerns Reader

Jan. 4, 2021

Editor, The News-Gazette:

I would like to share with the public my concerns about Rockbridge Memorial Gardens.

Most of my family who have passed are resting there. This cemetery used to be a beautiful place, one of the nicer ones in Rockbridge County. Through the years the cemetery has really been neglected. My family and I have voiced our concerns numerous times to the many different owners. We are always told the same thing, “We have switched hands and are working to make the cemetery better.”

It is so sad and so disrespectful to have to drive through potholes to visit your loved ones’ graves. Out of the many issues that are in need of attention, I think the road is the worst. I know that repairs are expensive, but so are our burial expenses. Every so often, the holes are filled with gravel which is a waste. The road needs to be repaved, or at least take up the damaged asphalt and put down gravel.

We have been complaining about this since 2005. It really is sad to think the last ride you or your loved ones will take will be a bumpy one. I would like to thank all those who read my letter.
