Cause Of The Backups

A tractor-trailer fire on interstate 81 Monday afternoon did not cause any injuries but it did snarl traffic for hours around Lexington and onto Timber Ridge, and a load of frozen chicken was destroyed. Lexington Fire Chief Ty Dickerson reported that when firefighters arrived around 4 p.m., the trailer, which the truck driver had separated from the cab, was fully involved. While the fire itself was knocked down within a few minutes, the scene was not cleared until around 8. Firefighters from Buena Vista and South River assisted in the firefighting effort and Rockbridge County Fire Rescue handled the hazardous materials cleanup. ALL 12 CHILDREN of Cornelia and William Washington likely gathered at the time of William’s 1903 funeral for this photograph in Michael Miley’s Lexington studio. Cornelia is seated in front (second from right); William may well be the subject of the portrait spotlighted on the back wall. William Lee Washington Jr. stands just below the portrait, in a white tie (back row, fifth from left). (courtesy of W&L Special Collections.)
