BV Fire Department Holds Golf Tourney

The Buena Vista Fire Department held the 2020 Thomas M. Dickinson Memorial Golf Tournament on Sept. 26 at The Vista Links Golf Course. The tournament, named for Tom Dickinson, life member and avid supporter of the BVFD who died in 2008, was one of only a few fundraisers the BVFD has been able to hold this year due to COVID-19 restrictions.

This year’s tournament raised nearly $9,000 and was coordinated by members of the BVFD, including Tom’s granddaughter Courtney Dickinson-Austin, her husband, Frankie; as well as their children, Kabell and Presley.

The tournament attracted 20 teams. Among the participants were Tom Dickinson’s two sons, Robert and Tommy Dickinson; two of his grandsons, Robbie and T.M. Dickinson; two of his greatgrandsons, Ryan and Storm Burks; two nephews, David Dickinson and Mike Henson; and one great nephew, Ryan Farris.

The winning golfers were Markie Clark, Trevor Statome, Corey Mace and Scott Gilbert. The event drew firefighters from Glasgow, Buena Vista, and Roanoke city. A post on the BVFD Facebook page, www.facebook.com/ BVFDCO10, lists the names of sponsors who have supported the department this year.

The BVFD missed out on several fundraisers this year due to restrictions, such as the annual carnival, Bingo, paint night and other events. The department has still been cooking its famous barbecue chicken and will be serving it this Saturday, Oct. 10, during the Mountain Day celebration downtown. The BVFD is also celebrating its 115th anniversary during Fire Prevention Week Oct. 4-10. The department’s annual gun raffle is currently underway and will wrap up on Nov.14 with the annual Harvest Dinner. Gun raffle tickets are available for $5 each.

Since the BVFD is an all-volunteer department, not having the carnival and Bingo this year has reduced its usual fundraising account by about $25,000. The department is hopeful it will recoup that loss in the coming months as restrictions are lifted. Donations are always accepted and are used 100 percent for equipment to better protect members and the community. Donations can be mailed to the BVFD at 2010 Sycamore Ave. Buena Vista, VA 24416.
