Buena Vista Cancels Spooktacular

Buena Vista officials have decided to cancel this year’s downtown Spooktacular.

After concerns were raised at Thursday’s night’s City Council meeting about holding the event in the midst of the pandemic, city officials this morning made the announcement to cancel the event, which had been scheduled for Friday, Oct. 30.

The following statement was posted on the Parks and Recreation’s Facebook page:

“After careful consideration regarding the health and safety of everyone in the city – our citizens, our businesses, and our staff– we have made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s Downtown Spooktacular.

“Following increased and overwhelming concerns about the COVID-19 virus, we felt this was the best way to proceed during such an unprecedented global situation. We are very disappointed that we are unable to hold this event for our children, but we know it’s the right decision.

“We are planning to continue with the virtual costume contest to give our children an opportunity to wear their costumes and share with the community. More information on this can be found on our Facebook page in the coming week.

“We thank everyone who planned participate and have been dedicated to helping spread joy in a tough situation. We look forward to being able to celebrate with this event next year.

“All of this said – If you, as a business or citizen/family, choose to proceed with participating during this time where many people may be out and about together, we want to strongly encourage you to remember that the pandemic has not yet passed and to follow all of the recommended guidelines from the state, the governor’s office, and the CDC.
