Blues Top Bath In Girls Hoops Opener

Monday, Dec. 2 -- The Parry McCluer High School girls basketball team kicked off the season with a 50-37 victory over Pioneer District rival Bath County in Buena Vista.

Katie Claytor scored a game-high 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Fighting Blues, who have won the past three VHSL Class 1 state championships. Anna Claytor notched a double-double for PM, totaling 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Maddie Henson chipped in 11 points and six boards.

Hannah Pritt tallied 14 points and six rebounds to pace the Chargers, while Gabrie Herscher finished with 11 points, six rebounds and five assists.

Herscher's 3-pointer tied the game at 33-33 with 6:25 remaining. But the Blues responded with a 13-0 run, going in front 46-33 on Katie Claytor's bucket with 1:48 to play. PM stepped up its full-court pressure down the stretch, forcing 10 Bath turnovers in the fourth quarter alone.

Emily Douglas added six points and five rebounds for the Chargers, while Selena Wolfe pulled down nine boards. Amber Grow notched seven points for PM, and Sydney Taylor snared nine rebounds.

The Blues return to the court with a home date against Buffalo Gap on Wednesday, starting with the junior varsity contest at 5:30 p.m.
