Blues Seeking Golfers

After graduating four players last spring, the Parry McCluer High School golf team begins this season with just one player, senior Trevor Wright, with the hope of drawing more players as competition gets underway.

Second-year head coach Fred Fix said he’s hopeful potential golfers will sign up and give the sport a try. “Some that weren’t going to play will change their minds, hopefully,” Fix said.

Fix, who was the Blues’ assistant coach for 10 years before becoming the head coach last year, said an announcement would be made on the first day of school Monday, and there have been postings online trying to get more players. “That’s all we can do,” he said.

Players who graduated from last year’s team were Jacob Hamilton, Matt Kiely, Alex Milanese and Bryant Wilhelm. The Blues won the regular-season Pioneer District title over Covington last year, going 5-0-1, before placing third of five teams in the district tournament. Four PM individuals advanced to the Region 1C tournament, led by Wilhelm, who placed 12th. Wright was PM’s third scorer in both the district and regional tournaments.

To record a team score, the Blues need four players. Otherwise, Wright and whoever else joins will only compete individually. The top two teams and top six individuals outside of those teams in the district tournament advance to the regional tournament.

PM’s first match will be at home today at The Vista Links Golf Course at 4:30 p.m. In preparing Wright, Fix said, “I told him, you don’t have to worry about beating anybody. Just play the course. Don’t try to match them and screw your game up. Play what you’ve been playing and stay in your round, and take care of business.”

While the Blues may not have a team or would have a team with mostly first-year players, Fix said Wright, who has been playing well in practice, can aim to be the medalist in some tournaments. “We’re going to try as hard as we can,” Fix said. “We’re going to do the best that we can do.”

After a couple of away district matches, the Blues will visit Rockbridge County at the Lexington Golf and Country Club on Sept. 3 at 4 p.m. They will also have a home match on Sept. 10 at 4:30 p.m. against Alleghany, Riverheads and William Fleming. The district tournament is scheduled to take place at The Vista Links on Sept. 25 at 9 a.m.
