Bequest Enables United Way To Present One-time Grants

As the result of a generous bequest to United Way of Rockbridge from the estate of Ellen Charske, Blue Ridge Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), Boxerwood Education Association and Rockbridge Area Relief Association have received special grants from the Charske Fund, United Way of Rockbridge.

Ms. Charske died in 2016 and is the benefactor of United Way’s Charske Fund. She was known for her sense of humor and her intellect. As mentioned in her obituary, she loved Lexington and especially Collierstown and all of the people she met in both places.

To recognize Charske’s love of this community, the UWR board has chosen to fund one-time special projects or programs for area nonprofits, including special equipment needs over the next several years as a result of this gift.

The grants will help Blue Ridge CASA provide recurring training opportunities to increase the knowledge and understanding of trauma by professionals and staff of the 25th Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, as well as the public at large. Boxerwood Education Association is making needed repairs to Boxerwood Lodge, its center of operations for educational programs for all ages. Rockbridge Area Relief Association used the funds to assist in purchasing a new food delivery truck.

For 70 years, UWR has provided financial assistance to worthwhile projects and safety net organizations in the community through its annual allocation process and special grants.
