Ava Conner died Nov. 24 in Spring, Texas

Averetta “Ava” Conner died peacefully on Nov. 24, 2018, in Spring, Texas, following a long struggle with dementia.

She was born Avaretta Frances Depoy along with twin sister Louvina May on Oct. 3, 1929, in Tenth Legion, Va., to William W. and Tracie Ruth Lam Depoy, one of 11 children. As a girl Ava would often walk over the mountain from Mauzy to Luray. She worked at the Mimslyn Inn during the war.

On July 19, 1948, she married Curtis C. Conner. They made their home in Buena Vista and then in Lexington. They had two children, Keith and Karen. Well into her 70s, Ava operated a beauty shop providing services to devoted clientele. She belonged to the Lexington Presbyterian Church. She was an active member of the Lexington VFW and Ladies Auxiliary, Post No. 1499, and past worthy matron of the Eastern Star, Rockbridge Chapter No. 125. In retirement Ava volunteered her time serving veterans.

She enjoyed bird watching, gardening, bingo and a good buffet. She grew beautiful violets. She had a wonderful smile. She loved her family unconditionally.

She was preceded in death by husband Curtis, son Keith and all her siblings.

She is survived by daughter Karen C. Lape (David), grandchildren Stephanie Lape of Grand Junction, Colo., David Lape of Houston, Texas, as well as grandsons Chris, Ryan and Michael Conner and two great-grandchildren.
