Article On Cline Not ‘Full Picture’

Nov. 11, 2019 Editor, The News-Gazette:

This letter is in response to the “Cline Votes Against Impeachment Resolution’ article in last week’s paper.

Should readers be satisfied with The News-Gazette’s narrow reporting of Congressman Ben Cline (Virginia’s 6th District) vote, and his subsequent statement regarding the U.S. House of Representatives’ Oct. 31 resolution to formalize an impeachment inquiry of President Donald Trump?

It’s easy to simply quote Mr. Cline, but apparently more difficult to provide a more complete description of the issue. The impeachment inquiry is proceeding lawfully, and in keeping with constitutional guidelines. Where these actions diverge from Rep. Cline’s partisan reaction is predictable, but certainly not the entire picture.

Both Mr. Cline and this newspaper have an obligation to remember that they each embody crucial components of our democratic fabric – that of elected representative of all the district’s constituents, and of a free press. Both have the job of fully informing the public.
