Another Honor For PM Alum KJ Cook

William and Mary rising senior KJ Cook, a Buena Vista native and a 2017 Parry McCluer High School graduate, was named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District 3 Track and Field Team on May 29, after a strong winter throwing season for the Tribe. Cook was one of five athletes from the Colonial Athletic Association to earn the award.

Cook, a finance major, had a career-best season indoors this winter. He set lifetime bests in both the shot put and the weight throw multiple times during the year, including a maker of 19.61 meters (64 feet, 4 inches) in the weight throw at Virginia Military Institute in mid-February to rank third all-time in program history. At the IC4A Championships, where he placed fourth in the weight throw, he wrapped up his season by winning the IC4A Championship in the shot put with a lifetime-best toss of 18.2 meters (59-8.5). That ranks Cook second in school history in that event, and he joins record-holder Taylor Frenia (Class of 2017) as the only member of the Tribe’s men’s team to ever win an IC4A title indoors in the shot put.

Overall, Cook won six events of the 14 he competed in during the indoor campaign, and had 10 top-three finishes as well. With his performances at the IC4A Championships in early March, accounting for 15 points himself, Cook helped lead the W&M men’s team to a runner-up finish, its best-ever at the championship event that was first held in 1921.

The outdoor track and field season was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

This spring, Cook received William and Mary’s Provost’s Award for having a grade point average of over 3.5.

With his selection to the alldistrict first team, Cook advances to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team ballot for the first time. Three teams will be selected from all the all-district honorees, and will be announced tomorrow, June 25.

While in high school, Cook won four individual state championships for PM – two in the shot put (indoor and outdoor) and two in the discus (outdoor). Cook hold’s PM school records in both events, with a heave of 178 feet, 2.5 inches in the discus and a throw of 58-1 in the shot put. Cook is the son of Kelly and Avis Cook.
