Author John Lane will read from his work “The Father Box” Thursday, Sept. 19, at 8 p.m. in the Marshall Museum’s Pogue Auditorium on the VMI post.

The Father Box is a collaboration between Lane and photographer Col. Rob McDonald, VMI’s associate dean for academic affairs. When Lane’s father committed suicide in 1959, he left behind a box of artifacts, some from his childhood in rural North Carolina and others from his service in World War II. The “Father Box” explores these artifacts through essays, poems, and photographs.

Lane is professor of English and environmental studies at Wofford College, where he also directs the Glendale Shoals Environmental Center. He is an award-winning author whose recent books include “Neighborhood Hawks: A Year Following Wild Birds,” “Anthropocene Blues: Poems; Coyote Settles the South,” and “Fate Moreland’s Widow: A Novel.”

This event is free. Copies of “The Father Box” will be available for purchase.

Lane’s appearance at VMI is sponsored by the dean’s academic speakers program, Sigma Tau Delta, and VMI’s Department of English, Rhetoric, and Humanistic Studies.
