Friday, March 6 -- Grundy defeated Parry McCluer High School 49-46 in the quarterfinals of the VHSL Class 1 state boys basketball tournament at Rockbridge County High School.
The local Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) will bring the SOAR Dunk Team to the Maury River Middle School gymnasium on Sunday, March 15, at 6 p.m. This event is offered free of charge and open to the public.
The Washington and Lee University men’s indoor track and field team won its fourth consecutive indoor Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship on Saturday and Sunday at Roanoke College’s Cregger Center in Salem. The W&L women placed second of nine teams.
The W&L wrestling team produced two regional champions and qualified three wrestlers for the NCAA Division III Championship en route to a second-place finish out of 20 teams at the NCAA Southeast Regional hosted by Messiah College on Friday and Saturday in Pennsylvania.
SVU senior guard Sam Armstrong, a 2014 Parry Mc- Cluer High School graduate, was named to the All-Capital Athletic Conference Second Team and selected the CAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Gardner-Webb University redshirt freshman Josh Fisher, a 2018 PMHS graduate, placed third in the men’s shot put at the Big South Conference Track And Field Indoor Championships on Saturday at Virginia Tech. He recorded a personal record with a throw of 15.92 meters (52-2.75) and earned Big South all-conference honors. In the men’s weight throw, he placed sixth with a throw of 16.97 meters (55-8). Fischer will now prepare for the outdoor season.
The Parry McCluer High School boys indoor track and field team won its first state championship in 40 years on Friday and Saturday at Roanoke College’s Cregger Center in Salem, while the PM girls placed sixth of 51 teams.
Making clutch free throws and stops down the stretch, the Parry McCluer High School boys basketball team defeated Auburn 44-42 in the Region 1C championship game on Saturday night at George Wythe High School in Wytheville.
The Parry McCluer High School girls basketball team’s season came to a close with a 40-22 road defeat to Galax in the Region 1C quarterfinals on Tuesday of last week.
