Facing fierce competition from five different states, the Rockbridge County High School wrestling team placed third of 60 teams at the ninth annual Ed Cressel Classic on Friday and Saturday at Virginia High School in Bristol.The Wildcats, who had three individual champions, scored 158.5 points, only trailing Tennessee state power Cleveland (256) and North Carolina school Avery County (205.5). Rounding out the top five teams were Wirt County (131) and Grayson County (122.5).

RC Girls Unbeaten In Duals

The Rockbridge County High School girls swimming team defeated all four opponents in final home meet of the season on Friday night at Rockbridge Aquatics Center, while the RC boys beat two of four teams. The Parry Mc- Cluer swimmers continue to show improvement.The Lady Wildcats, who remained undefeated in dual meets this season, beat Alleghany 130-39, PM 140-11, Valley District rival Turner Ashby 109-61 and Wilson Memorial 141-20. The RC boys defeated Alleghany 107- 25 and PM 112-5, but lost narrowly to WM 76-75 and TA 80-74.

The Parry McCluer High School boys basketball team broke out of its offensive slump in emphatic fashion on Friday, coasting to an 83-32 Pioneer District win over Craig County in Buena Vista.Will Dunlap posted 29 points and 10 rebounds to help the Fighting Blues (2-0 Pioneer District) snap a threegame skid. The Blues improved to 7-3 by trouncing Chatham 59-32 on Saturday at the Rock the Ribbon Roundball Shootout at Rockbridge County High School.

Being shorthanded didn’t deter the Parry McCluer High School basketball team from picking up another Pioneer District win.With just six players in uniform – two of whom didn’t start the season on the varsity roster – the Fighting Blues scrapped out a 35-27 home victory over Craig County on Thursday, improving to 3-0 in district play.

PM Fourth At Franklin Duals

The Parry McCluer High School wrestling team placed fourth of 12 teams at the Franklin City Duals, going 2-3 on Saturday.The Fighting Blues cruised to a 54-6 win over Northumberland and shut out Norfolk Christian 54-0.

RC Girls Place High At Heritage

Fresh off winter break and limited practice due to snow last week, the Rockbridge County High School indoor track teams had strong performances in their two meets last week.Competing on Thursday at Roanoke College, Josh Wawrzyniak won the boys’ 500-meter dash in a personal-record (PR) time of 1:11.81, eight tenths of a second ahead of the runner-up. Pierson Hull finished 15th in 1:19.36.
