Friday, Jan. 17 -- Due to the forecast of inclement weather, Saturday's Pioneer District boys basketball contest between Parry McCluer High School and Narrows has been canceled.
Returning for its seventh year, the annual Rock the Ribbon Roundball Shootout was again a successful fundraiser for the American Cancer Society at Rockbridge County High School.With 11 basketball games – three on Friday and eight on Saturday – the event, which is presented by Alcova Mortage, welcomed lots of fans to watch plenty of high-quality basketball. Numbers were still being added up for this year, but Rock the Ribbon had raised $63,000 for the ACS before last weekend, with the funds going toward cancer research and prevention.
The Rockbridge County High School girls basketball team cruised to a 53-26 win over Liberty (Bedford) on Saturday morning at the Rock the Ribbon Roundball Shootout.RC (4-4) raced to a 17-4 lead after the first quarter and stretched its lead to 41-10 at halftime. The Wildcats cooled down in the second half, getting all of their reserves into the game, but Liberty (0-8) never threatened to comeback.
The Rockbridge County High School boys basketball team capped off the seventh annual Rock the Ribbon Roundball Shootout with a 61-43 win over Alleghany in the RC gym on Saturday night.Jailik Lynch led four Wildcats in double figures with 17 points, also adding six assists. Aaron Plogger notched 13 points, D.J. Lewis totaled 11 markers and nine rebounds, and Griff Ray posted 10 points and 11 boards for RC (6-5).

Chatham picked up its offense in the second half, but the deficit was too large to overcome.
The Parry McCluer High School girls basketball team suffered a 53-36 loss to sharpshooting Stuarts Draft at the Rock the Ribbon Roundball Shootout on Saturday.The Fighting Blues (3-6) made strong runs to keep the game close in the first half. Both teams struggled to get going, with Draft (7-2) leading 4-1 after the first quarter, but picking up the tempo after that. The Cougars led 26-18 at halftime.
Playing against a physical team in the Valley District opener, the Rockbridge County High School boys basketball team suffered a 60-35 road loss on Thursday.The Wildcats, who fell to 5-5, struggled to shoot against the Blue Streaks, who improved to 3-5 overall. “They are physically stronger,” RC head coach Darrell Plogger said of the Blue Streaks, who had a notable size advantage over the Wildcats. “They pushed us around. It was a rough game. We didn’t shoot it very well. We really couldn’t overcome that.”
Struggling on both ends of the court in the Valley District opener, the Rockbridge County High School girls basketball team suffered a 58-43 loss on Thursday at Harrisonburg.The Wildcats trailed 16-13 after the first quarter, but the Blue Streaks went on a 12-0 run to start the second quarter, outscoring RC 16-2 in the period to take a 32-15 lead into halftime. The Wildcats cut the lead to 14 by the end of the third quarter, but Harrisonburg stayed comfortably ahead for the rest of the game. The Blues Streaks ended the week with a record of 4-6, while the Wildcats improved to 4-4 with a 53-26 home win over Liberty (Bedford) on Saturday.
