High School Teams Resume Practice

As schools wait on a decision on the status of the fall sports season from the Virginia High School League, the Rockbridge County High School football team is beginning conditioning this week. Other fall sports teams at RC and Parry McCluer High School plan to start practicing soon.

Run of the Mill 5K Canceled

The third annual Run of the Mill 5K has been canceled for this year due to concerns for volunteers. Race coordinator John Siegfried said the 5K, originally scheduled to take place on April 18 but postponed to Sept. 5 due to the coronavirus pandemic, has been rescheduled for Saturday, April 24, 2021.

Remembering Another Moment In History

With protests for racial justice going on around the United States since the killing of George Floyd by police in Minneapolis on May 25, a Black 1970 Rockbridge High School graduate reflected last week on how race relations have changed over the last 50 years and how much more work has to be done.

ODAC Pushes Back Start Of Fall Sports

The Old Dominion Athletic Conference announced on Friday that none of its fall sports teams will be allowed to play their season openers until Sept. 11 because of the coronavirus pandemic. Sept. 1 had been the original date when teams could start their seasons.

NB Speedway Reopens

After the first two months of the season were canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Natural Bridge Speedway held its summer season opener on Friday, with four races. The speedway was allowed to reopen, with spectators in attendance at up to 50 percent capacity, because the state of Virginia entered Phase III of reopening last Wednesday.

No Decision Made Yet On Fall Sports

The Virginia High School League Executive Committee opted on Thursday in a special session to postpone its decision on determining when, or if, a fall sports season will begin this year.

Youth Golf Camp Teaches Skills

Ridin’ And Shootin’

The Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association held its Appalachian Mountain Championships last week at the Virginia Horse Center. Cowboys and cowgirls rode horses while aiming and shooting their 45 caliber single action revolvers at balloons. Each gun was loaded with five rounds of specially prepared blank ammunition. The black powder blanks could pop a balloon at a distance of about 15 feet. The competition included men’s, women’s and senior divisions as well as a wrangler class for children age 11 and under. The event was the second held at the horse center in as many weeks and also the second since the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the equine facility in mid-March. Action continues at the horse center (without spectators and strictly following pandemic protocols) with the Arabian Horse Association Region 15 Champsionships today (Wednesday, July 1) and the House Mountain Horse Show for hunter/jumpers next Tuesday and Wednesday, July 7 and 8.
