Aug. 19, 2022 Editor, The News-Gazette: As a retired chemical engineer who began his career troubleshooting chemical plants, I am concerned at the approach the climate activists in the U.S. are using in the problem of global warming. Unless we take the “global “in global warming seriously, there is little chance we will succeed in the solution of the largest problem facing mankind.
Aug. 19, 2022 Editor, The News-Gazette: If Washington, Lee, and Jackson were here today, I honestly believe they would be heartbroken. They would probably say what transpired since 2020 is disgraceful, especially damage to statues and government, private and business buildings. There is more racism today than ever before because people are beating the issue to death, causing once fair-minded people to become racist.
Aug. 15, 2022 Editor, The News-Gazette: We relocated here about two months ago, and, at every turn, your friendly greetings have reassured us that moving to Rockbridge County was the right decision.
Aug. 15, 2022 Editor, The News-Gazette: I wrote a letter a while back expressing confusion about the American dream and what “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” is all about.
Aug. 15, 2022 Editor, The News Gazette: I vacationed with my daughter recently, and it reminded me painfully of what it’s like to walk the world in a young woman’s body. So many men think they have a right to make obscene comments about a woman’s appearance and, worse, what they’d like to do to her. The world tells women again and again that their safety and dignity aren’t worth much.
Aug. 22, 2022 Editor, The News-Gazette: I’m not fond of most politicians. Many are: too old, too outspoken, too one-sided, too long in office or more interested in their own reelection than the good of their constituents and country. Term limits would be the answer but fat chance of that ever happening.
Aug. 12, 2022 Editor, The News-Gazette: I believe that an appointed board or commission is acceptable when the purpose of that body is in charge of executing city policies/ procedures as is the case with, for example, the Planning Commission.
Aug. 15, 2022 Editor, The News-Gazette: I listened to an NPR interview last week in which a member of the President’s Council of Economic Advisors (it may have been the chair) stated that the “Inflation Reduction Act” will result in a 40% reduction of green house gas emissions by 2030. This statement immediately begs two questions, neither of which were asked by the interviewer.
Aug. 8, 2022 Editor, The News-Gazette: On Aug. 3, Thomas Rideout, president of Generals Redoubt, proposed “a formatted campus debate that examines the legacy of Robert E. Lee.” For good measure, he added he “we would support the same debate format for George Washington.” Mr. Rideout’s probably wellintentioned, but hopelessly misguided “proposal,” was supported by his call for “viewpoint diversity.” Recently, Generals Redoubt received some press as a group that supports “free speech on campus.” Let us look at the facts.
Aug. 15, 2022 Editor, The News-Gazette: I found it interesting to read The News-Gazette editorial on Aug. 3, as well as the column Ink Spot contribution from Matt Paxton entitled “Fair is Fair” in response to the recent $740 billion bill passed by the Congress this past week.
