A local ordinance in San Francisco requiring mask wearing in public during the pandemic resulted in a group of citizens forming what they call the Anti-Mask League. The league included physicians, citizens, civil libertarians, and at least one member of local government. An estimated 4,000 to 5,000 citizens attended the organizational meeting. Some members of the league wanted to collect signatures on a petition to end the mask requirement, while others wanted to initiate recall procedures for the city health officer. Members of the anti-mask league also agitated for the city’s mayor to resign if the ordinance was not repealed.
