Sept. 30, 2022 Editor, The News-Gazette: Reading the furious scrawlings of our neighbors in these pages, we’re all painfully aware of the truth Mark Twain wrote in his autobiography: “If we would learn what the human race really is at bottom, we need only observe it in election times.”
There may be some debate over whether we are still in a pandemic or not but there is no question whether most folks should avail themselves of the opportunity to get the latest booster.
In the weeks leading up to my long weekend at Virginia Beach, I kept seeing a New York Times story in my Facebook newsfeed about how it was becoming increasingly rare to find anyone who had not had COVID-19.
Early voting is underway for the Nov. 8 elections. Beginning this past Friday, Sept. 24, registered voters could go to their local registrars’ offices during normal office hours and cast ballots for the upcoming elections. Voters do not have to give a reason for casting an early ballot. We supported the state law that was enacted to allow early voting, believing that making it easier to participate in this basic right of self-governance enhances our democracy.
The old saying, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step,” can be applied to many things in life, from writing a book, completing a home improvement project, or building a boat. But, I think it over-simplifies what is required to see a task through to the finish.
Sept. 23, 2022 Editor, The News-Gazette: The Sept. 21 News-Gazette editorial’s call for civility in our upcoming city council election ends with a plea to the candidates: “Please be agreeable in your disagreements.” It’s an unobjectionable request. But it’s badly misdirected.
