A Very 2020 Christmas Parade

The Lexington Christmas Parade had a decidedly different look this year. The parade, held in a deluge of cold rain this past Friday, had fewer entries than previous years and there were no marching bands. Nonetheless a sizable number of motorists waited patiently to merge into traffic on Main Street to view the parade in reverse. Fourteen of the 22 registered entries, including the elaborate float from Boxerwood below, participated in this year’s event. Festival With A Purpose

The fifth annual Festival of Trees at Natural Bridge State Park features 17 trees this year. Area residents are invited to drop by the visitor center and vote for their favorite tree by donating items to benefit Project Horizon. The festival continues through Jan. 1. This Friday, Saturday and Sunday, from 5 to 8 p.m. daily, is also the first weekend of the Luminary Lights celebration at the state park. A New Way To Parade

For the first time in Rockbridge area history, the Christmas parades for Buena Vista and Lexington were “reverse” parades, which meant that entries were lined up on one side of the street while spectators drove by in their cars to view them. Parade organizers in both cities went this route to keep parade entrants and spectators safe as the spread of the coronavirus continues. While the weather was good for the Buena Vista parade on Thursday night, the rain poured down on the parade in Lexington on Friday night. (Stephanie Mikels Blevins and Joann Ware photos)
