The exhibition at the Nelson Gallery for December features a husband/wife duo - a first for the gallery. John and Pauline Mason work in different media (stone and paint on canvas) on themes that are thought-provoking and wide-ranging. John, who is American-born, is a stone-carver who lived for many years in Great Britain, where he earned his doctorate and taught history at the University of Birmingham. It was here that he met and married Pauline, who is British. After several years living abroad, in 2004 they took up residence in Lexington. Both were teachers at the college level - she at the University of Maine. Artistically they explore many subjects. John sometimes delves into Greek mythology in his sculptures - other times images inspired by the landscape around his studio in Kerrs Creek. Pauline paints largely in abstract shapes, deriving meaning from several genre: symbols with Egyptian and Daoist themes and seascapes from the Eastern Shore and Cornwall, in Great Britain. They call their show “Stones, Symbols and Seas.”
