Saturday was a beautiful afternoon for gathering by the pavilion at New Monmouth Presbyterian Church to create advent wreaths. Thank you to everyone who brought greens and other supplies to share to assemble advent wreaths. Advent begins this coming Sunday! Thank you to Karen Duff for providing books to be read during the advent season.
The Effinger Volunteer Fire Department’s Auxiliary would like to thank all those who supported the Hunters Dinner served at the firehouse on Saturday evening, Nov. 21. Lots of good food and fellowship were enjoyed by all. Support from the meals purchased and the gun raffle will be used by the fire department and first responders as they serve the community. There will be a Christmas Dance at the firehouse on Saturday, Dec. 18, with the Worx. The date for ticket sales to begin will be posted on the department’s Facebook page.
High Bridge Presbyterian Church will celebrate the first Sunday of Advent on Nov. 28. During the week of Thanksgiving the Presbyterian Women plan to decorate the Chrismon Tree for the sanctuary and members will complete the Hanging of the Greens. The children have painted items for the nativity scene.
First Fruits and Stewardship Sunday was observed at Oxford Presbyterian Church on Sunday morning. The guest minister was the Rev. Marina Gopadze. Those bringing the fruits of the harvest forward for the minister to bless were Jennifer Leech (ears of corn), Mary F. Rhodenizer (apples), Rufus Tyree (bread), Greg Sellers (pumpkin) and Carol Hines/ Evelyn Ayers (flowers). Pledge cards and offerings were also presented.
Parry McCluer Middle School was one of several school sites in the Rockbridge area where turkeys and Thanksgiving sides were distributed to area residents in the second annual turkey give-away spearheaded by the Rockbridge Area Relief Association and Campus Kitchen at Washington and Lee University. Michael R. Taylor, chief curator and deputy director for art and education at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VFMA) in Richmond, will deliver this year’s Pamela H. Simpson Lecture in Art History at Washington and Lee University on Nov. 30 at 5 p.m. in the Wilson Hall Auditorium
Melissa Kerin, associate professor of art history at Washington and Lee University, published a paper in Material Religion: The Journal of Objects, Art and Belief titled “Cut, Tuck, and Paste: Re purposing Mass-Produced Imagery at Buddhist Shrines in Ladakh, India.”
The monthly board meeting for the Rockbridge Area Recreation Organization will be held Wednesday, Dec. 1, starting at 6 p.m. at Lexington City Hall in the community meeting room.
