The Greater Rockbridge County Skateboarder Coalition hosted its first session of free, beginner skateboarding lessons on Sunday, March 6, at the Lexington Skate Park. Twenty-one children attended the event with their parents and grandparents, said Mary Harvey-Halseth, the secretary for the coalition’s board of directors. Board member Micheal Berry, board president Lance Branham and Jason Kerr taught the lessons. (They are shown with Harvey-Halseth in photo at left.) Helmets were donated by the Lexington Police Department, and skateboards, healthy snacks and additional safety equipment were donated by Live Healthy Rockbridge Kids. “The place was packed for over two hours,” Harvey-Halseth wrote on Facebook. “It was awesome.” In January, the coalition became an official nonprofit and began a GoFundMe to raise money for Lexington Skate Park renovations. As of Monday at 11 a.m., the coalition had raised $1,160 of its $35,000 goal. (Mary Harvey-Halseth photos)
