On the afternoon of Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2018, after a courageous battle with cancer, Kenneth William Evans III was called home.

He was the eldest child of the late Kenneth William Evans Jr. and the late Ruth Huffman Evans.  He was born on Feb. 11, 1954, in Lexington.  He was among the last children to be born in the old Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Kenneth is survived by two sons, Brandon Evans and wife Angie, and Scott Evans and wife Kristie; four grandchildren, Justin, Nykkolas, Caden and Ryan; one great-grandchild, Cooper; his sister, Joyce Evans Chapman and husband John; his brother, Paul Evans and wife Jennifer; and several nieces and nephews.

Kenneth was raised in Buena Vista and graduated from Parry McClure High School in 1972.  After working for the Virginia Department of Corrections, he became a Virginia state trooper.  He was a member of the 63rd training session, graduating on Feb. 3, 1978.  He was the first Virginia state trooper to have a bomb-detecting dog.

Kenneth and his dog “Ted” had many high-profile assignments, including bomb sweeps for U.S. presidents, foreign dignitaries, sports figures, and other high-risk public and private events.  He was privileged to have met many famous and important people.

He then worked for Dominion Power in their security as a drug-dog handler.  After leaving Dominion Power, he began a career as the manager of a large private business.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Lynchburg General Hospital and especially to the doctors, nurses, staff, and Hospice nurses at Guggenheimer.  Your caring attitude was incredible.  Thank you for making and keeping him comfortable.

There will be a visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 1, at Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Home to share memories and celebrate his life.  Interment will be at a later date with a private family ceremony.

Arrangements are being handled by Bolling, Grose, & Lotts Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
