Friday, March 2 -- Parry McCluer High School defeated Rye Cove 54-36 in the quarterfinals of the VHSL Group 1A state girls basketball tournament at the Cregger Center in Salem.

Peyton Mohler scored 12 points and dished out seven assists for the Region C champion Fighting Blues (25-2), who won the state title a season ago. Kate Beverley added 11 points for PM, while Tristen Clark recorded nine points and eight rebounds.

Abigail Roller scored a game-high 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Eagles (14-13), and Lexie Rhoton notched 12 markers.

PM used a 10-0 first-half run to take a 17-9 lead early in the second quarter, and the Blues would stretch the margin to 28-16 by halftime. However, Rye Cove opened the second half on a 9-0 spurt, closing the gap to 28-25 within the first two minutes of the third period.

But from there, Clark hit a pair of free throws to break the run, and Madison Dunlap's jumper quickly pushed the advantage back to seven (32-25). The Eagles wouldn't seriously threaten PM's lead the rest of the way, and the Blues pulled away late.

Dunlap totaled eight points for PM, and Emma Camden chipped in seven markers. The Blues finished 14-of-17 from the foul line and also forced 20 Rye Cove turnovers. Katy Roller notched six points and six rebounds for the Eagles.

In the semifinals, PM will take on the winner of Saturday's quarterfinal between Eastside and Galax. The outcome of that game will determine the date and location of the semifinal matchup: the Blues will either face Galax in Salem on Monday, or will travel to UVA-Wise to meet Eastside on Tuesday.
