Signup For Community Cleanup Under Way

Area residents are being encouraged to gather a group and select a road, trail or river bank to clean up next month during the 24th annual Rockbridge Area Community Cleanup.

The Rockbridge Area Conservation Council (RACC), in partnership with Rockbridge County and the Virginia Department of Transportation, is sponsoring the event March 17–25 this year.

In order to raise additional awareness about litter, Rockbridge County has once again joined RACC to create a Litter Challenge. Teams will take photos of their bags to document their haul of litter. The winning team will receive the Litter Cup, created by Mark Cline, and will hold the cup until the next cleanup day. Documentation for the challenge will be used for education on this issue.  The “Trash Bashers” team has won the cup two years running.

The cleanup is a volunteer citizen effort to pick up trash along roadsides and in other public areas to beautify the county.   RACC is asking Adopt-a-Highway groups to work on this day to increase the communitywide effort.

In the years past, up to 600 volunteers have collected over six tons of trash.  In 2017, about 350 people in 50 different areas picked up more than 600 bags of trash.  “Come join us this year so we can get back up to 600 participants for 2018,” said Barbara Walsh, RACC executive director.

Those interested can sign up by visiting and clicking the green Community Clean Up button on the main page.  There residents will find an electronic signup form and a map showing roads already selected. Mail-in signup forms, bags and vests will be available at the Rockbridge Regional Library and its in-county branches, at the county recycling collection centers and the Office of Community Development located in the Rockbridge County administration building on or about March 5.

Participants may choose the roads or locations that they wish to clean and can also choose alternate dates and times if needed.

Anyone who knows of particular areas that should be targeted during the cleanup can notify Walsh at 463-2330 or, or mention the area during online registration.
