Tuesday, Jan. 2 – In the first of two county rivalry games this week, the Parry McCluer High School girls basketball team dominated Rockbridge County 76-13 on Tuesday night in Lexington.

The Fighting Blues (5-1), the defending Group 1A state champions, never trailed, racing a 26-4 lead at the end of the first quarter, ending the stanza on a 20-0 run. PM hit four of its eight 3-pointers in the quarter. The Blues’ defensive press troubled RC all night, as the Wildcats (4-7) struggled with their shooting the whole game and committed 37 turnovers, and PM scored 38 points off those turnovers. The Blues, wearing their new black and blue uniforms, committed just six turnovers.

RC held PM to nine points in the second quarter, with PM missing some inside shots, but the Wildcats managed just two points, trailing 35-6 at halftime.

With their starters back in to begin the second half, the Blues started the third quarter by going on an 11-0 run, forcing turnovers, grabbing rebounds on both ends of the floor, and making inside shots and free throws. At the end of the quarter, PM led 50-11.

The Blues extended their lead to over 60 in the fourth quarter, allowing just two points from RC. PM reserves played the final few minutes and didn’t give RC any easy shots.

Madison Dunlap led four Blues in double figures, scoring 13 points. Maggie Patterson added 11 points, sinking three 3-pointers, Hannah Craft and Tristen Clark each added 10 points, Hailey Huffman chipped in eight, Kate Beverley notched seven, and Peyton Mohler tallied six.

Lyla Chittum led the Wildcats with four points, Emily Galford and Haley Cruze each added three points, Zoe Camden had two, and Kirsten Vest scored one.

The Blues and Wildcats will meet again on Saturday at PM at 4:30 p.m.

Before then, the Blues will travel to take on Pioneer District rival Narrows on Thursday, starting with the junior varsity game at 6 p.m. The Wildcats will play host to Valley District foe Broadway on Friday, starting with JV action at 5:30 p.m.
