Friday, Nov. 10 – The Rockbridge County High School football team concluded a season of great progress with a 42-35 loss at Spotswood in the Region 3C quarterfinals on Friday in Penn Laird.

The fifth-seeded Wildcats (6-5) were hurt by three turnovers in the first half – two fumbles and an interception – and the fourth-seeded Blazers (8-3) scored touchdowns after two of them. The game was close the whole way, tied 21-21 at halftime on a night when temperatures dipped into the teens.

Spotswood's Brennan Brown scored the winning TD on a 3-yard TD with 3:31 left in the game. RC got to the Spotswood 19-yard line on its final drive, but the Wildcats fumbled on fourth down with 34 seconds left, and Spotswood took a knee to end the game. The Blazers’ quarterback, Alec High, threw three TD passes.

Malik Dunn ran for two TDs and also ran for a two-point conversion for RC, Ben Rhodenizer and Triniti Stores each ran for one TD, and Kyle Irvine scored on an 80-yard kickoff return.

Against a fast and aggressive defense, Rhodenizer completed 17-of-24 passes with one interception for 223 yards. Rhodenizer finished the season with 3,234 passing yards, comfortably in the lead for Timesland quarterbacks.

The Wildcats will miss their 15 seniors, a class that includes Rhodenizer, Stores, Dunn and Irvine. The senior class helped turn around a program that had won just one game in the three years before this one to help the Wildcats have their best season in five years and make the playoffs for the first time in five years.

Spotswood will next visit top seed Heritage in the regional semifinals.
