Mildred Belle Rhodes Ruble, 83, of Lexington, formerly of Petersburg, died Sunday, July 6, 2014 at Beaufont Towers in Richmond.

Mildred Belle Rhodes Ruble, 83, of Lexington, formerly of Petersburg, died Sunday, July 6, 2014 at Beaufont Towers in Richmond.

She was born March 18, 1931, a daughter of the late Claude W. Rhodes and Theresa McKinney Rhodes. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, William Cecil Ruble.

Millie Ruble was born and raised in Natural Bridge and graduated from Natural Bridge High School and Virginia Baptist School of Nursing in Lynchburg. She was a practicing registered nurse for more than 45 years, working as both a registered nurse anesthetist and a labor and delivery nurse. She worked at Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg and at Carillion Roanoke Community Hospital. After retiring from nursing, Millie worked as a volunteer for the Rockbridge Area Free Clinic in Lexington and for the Carillion Stonewall Jackson Hospital Auxiliary. She was a member of the Virginia Baptist School of Nursing Alumnae Association and Lexington’s Red Hat Society. She was a frequent volunteer for the Effinger Volunteer Fire Department, helping to raise funds for the department by making apple butter. She traveled with members of the department as they entered apple butter making contests around the state. She was an election poll official and volunteered often during local and state elections. Millie attended Oxford Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are her children, William C. Ruble III of Providence Forge, Charles Lee Ruble of Christiansburg, April Harper of Franklin, Tenn., and Bonnie Reilly of Pinehurst, N.C.; one sister, Mae Garrett, and one brother, Franklin Rhodes, both of Natural Bridge Station; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, July 12, at Oxford Presbyterian Church by Dr. Horace Douty and Dr. Randy Ruble. Burial will be private. There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made in loving memory of Mrs. Ruble to the Effinger Volunteer Fire Department, 2824 Collierstown Road, Lexington, VA 24450, Rockbridge Historical Society, 101 E. Washington Street, Lexington, VA 24450 or Rockbridge Area Hospice 315 Myers Street, Lexington, VA 24450.
