Health Center Continues Help With Health Insurance Needs

During the initial enrollment period, counselors at the Rockbridge Area Health Center assisted over 350 people apply for health insurance through the Federal Marketplace insurance exchange (healthcare.gov).

While the open enrollment period ended in March, certified application counselors (CACs) continue to be available to assist people who successfully enrolled in a health insurance plan. Volunteer CACs can answer questions concerning insurance benefits and qualified health plans. CACs can also assist enrolled individuals to register changes in circumstances with the Federal Marketplace.

There are some changes that can qualify an individual for a special enrollment period: gaining or losing job-based health coverage, change in income, moving to another area, pregnancy or change in marital status to name a few.

The volunteer CACs will be available to assist in navigating the Federal Marketplace and provide information about available insurance options.

From now until July 1 there is a special enrollment period for individuals currently enrolled in a COBRA program.

There is also a special focus on college students who recently graduated. If a graduate loses coverage under the parent’s health plan or one provided through their college, CACs can assist with applying for a Marketplace plan.

Individuals who do not have minimal essential coverage or qualify for an exemption may be subject to a fee when they file 2014 Federal Income tax next year.
