Wednesday, Nov. 7 – In an intense showdown, the Rockbridge County High School volleyball team defended its Region 3C championship by defeating Rustburg 3-0 on Wednesday night in Lexington.

The match could’ve easily gone into four or five sets, but the Wildcats (21-3) overcame six set points in the second set, erasing a six-point deficit to win it 28-26. RC, the top seed in the tournament, went on to win its second consecutive regional title by a score of 28-23, 28-26, 25-20.

The win earned the Wildcats a home state quarterfinal match against Hidden Valley (22-5) this Saturday at 6 p.m. Admission is $10, and doors will open at 4:30 p.m. It will be a rematch of last year’s state quarterfinal match, which Hidden Valley won 3-2 at RC.

In the first set of Wednesday’s final, the Wildcats trailed 10-7 before scoring the next four points, and they would not trail again.

Second-seeded Rustburg (16-7), a young team with four freshmen, went on an 8-0 run early in the second set to take a 14-9 lead and stayed ahead until late in the set. Facing a 24-19 deficit, the Wildcats dug deep and went on a 6-0 run, with kills by Graceon Armstrong, Jaydyn Clemmer and freshman Aiyana Cooper, along with an ace from Armstrong. The Red Devils fought back to lead 26-25, but the set went to the Wildcats after three Rustburg errors.

The third set was a back-and-forth affair until the Wildcats went on a 4-0 run, fueled by Armstrong’s serving, to take a 17-14 lead. RC led the rest of the way, and Armstrong ended the match with two kills.

Armstrong had 13 kills, four blocks, 11 digs and three aces. Jaydyn Clemmer led the Wildcats with 14 kills and 18 digs, and Kennedy Clemmer added 16 digs. Other RC leaders were Jaden Harrison with 27 assists, Jordyn Wright with eight digs and Krissy Whitesell with four kills.

Anna Maddox led Rustburg with 11 kills and had six digs, Delany Scharnus added 11 digs and three aces, and Katie Hardie had seven kills, eight digs, three aces and two blocks.
