Wildcats Repeat As Regional Golf Champions

Monday, Sept. 24 – The Rockbridge County High School golf team repeated as the Region 3C tournament champion on Monday at London Downs Golf Club in Forest.

Playing in cold and windy conditions on a wet course, the Wildcats won with a score of 326 to edge runner-up Western Albemarle’s 328. RC and Western Albermarle advanced to the Class 3 state tournament, which will take place on Monday, Oct. 8 at Williamsburg National Golf Club. Rustburg tallied a 329 to place third of eight teams from three district, and Spotswood shot a 332 to finish fourth. Completing the standings were Fort Defiance, Turner Ashby, Monticello and Liberty.

Fort’s Christian Michael was the medalist, firing a 70 on the 18-hole, par-72 course. Cole Higgins led the Wildcats and placed seventh overall, firing a 79, and teammate Garrett Huffman shot an 80. Will McClung carded an 82 for RC’s third score, and Cole Cathcart posted an 85 to complete team scoring. Also competing for the Wildcats were John Shomo (92) and Noah Sullivan (105).

Next up the Wildcats will prepare for the Class 3 state tournament, which will take place on Monday, Oct. 8 at Williamsburg National Golf Club. The Wildcats placed second at the state tournament last year.
