Thursday, Sept. 14 – The Rockbridge County High School volleyball team earned their first Valley District win on Thursday, defeating Waynesboro 3-0 in Lexington.

Bouncing back from a five-set district loss at Fort Defiance on Tuesday, the Wildcats (7-1 overall, 1-1 district) held off the Little Giants 25-15, 25-14, 25-17.

Waynesboro (0-11, 0-2) only threatened in the third set, taking the lead early and trailing 13-12 before the Wildcats gradually pulled away with strong net play.

In the first set, RC raced to an 8-1 lead, during which Hannah Burch made two of her match-high seven kills. The Wildcats gradually extended the lead to double digits.

RC had another strong start in the second set, grabbing a 10-3 lead and enduring some long rallies to stay comfortably ahead of the Little Giants for the rest of the frame.

The Wildcats had a scare early in the third set when Hannah Berlin went down with an injured knee. Waynesboro took a 10-8 lead, but Berlin’s teammates stepped up and finished well for her as she watched on crutches.

Other than Burch, who had 11 assists, RC’s leaders were Kennedy Clemmer with 17 digs and 13 assists, Jaydyn Clemmer with 16 digs and six kills, Jaden Harrison with 16 digs and six kills, and Keely Doyle and Erika Paredes with three kills each.

Waynesboro’s leaders were Lauren Kelso with five kills, Paige Smith with 11 digs and Alli McCauley with seven assists.

Next up the Wildcats will travel for the Nike East Coast Showcase, a tournament at Virginia Beach Middle School on Saturday. There will be 48 teams competing, and RC will play five matches.
